UDF WON IN THE ELECTIONS - 2025

The results for Nayarambalam Grama Panchayat show a clear UDF victory, with the UDF securing the majority of seats while the LDF will function as the opposition. Alongside these alliances, the election outcome also includes representation from candidates outside the two main fronts—one independent candidate has won a seat, and one candidate from the NDA has also been elected.

ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനു മേൽ ചരിത്രമുള്ള വാടേൽ സെന്റ്‌ ജോർജ് ദേവാലയം പൂർണ്ണമായി ഇടിച്ചു നിരത്തി. ഇനി ഇവിടെ ഉയരും കൂറ്റൻ ഒരു ദേവാലയം. വിക്ടോറിയൻ എന്നോ കേരളീയം എന്നോ പറയാൻ കഴിയാത്ത പുതിയ കാലത്തിന്റെ കോണ്‍ക്രീറ്റ് രൂപകൽപ്പനയിൽ പുതിയ കെട്ടിടം അടുത്ത രണ്ടു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിൽ പൂർത്തിയാക്കാനാണ്  ഇടവകക്കമ്മിറ്റിയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. പഴയ പള്ളി കിഴക്കോട്ടു ദർശനമായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പുതിയ പള്ളി വടക്കോട്ട്‌ ദർശനമായി ആയിരിക്കും ഉയരുക.
ദേവാലയം മാത്രമല്ല, സെന്റ്‌ ജോസഫ്‌ സ്കൂൾ കെട്ടിടം കൂടി ഇടിച്ചു നിരത്തി പുതിയ കെട്ടിടത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറും. പുതിയ സ്കൂളിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു.

Hartal in Nayarambalam

Yet another strike in the island. This time it was staged as the reaction of the mob when a bicyclist was killed in a bus accident. Obviously the bus drivers are responsible for this homicide. Granted, but will this entire irresponsibility ended up with a hartal? I am using public transport system in a daily basis for years. Most of the passenger buses in this system violate traffic rules massively. It may be over speed, rude overtaking, drunken drive or phone-in drive, but neither the passengers inside the bus nor the cops react against these violations.
Our vigil must be there to prevent the casualties, there is no point in reacting when the inevitable is happened. To achieve this, all the people and legal enforcement authorities has responsibility to react when such violations are being seen.

Water Scarcity becomes a big problem in Nayarambalam

Today a road blocking strike staged at Nayarambalam under the leadership of some local political party leaders and residential association groups. Severe water scarcity was the trigger of the strike. Some antisocial gangs also took part in the strike and they blocked even narrow pocket roads of the village.
No doubt, water scarcity is a big issue. The village needs a permanent solution. We don't want to be a part of a staged political drama. But unfortunately we the people became a part of such a political drama today.
This is a perfect example how the water scarcity issue can be politicized even in rural level.

Day 2 

By the midnight of yesterday the strike was finished as the tehsildar assured immediate solution to the problem. But still now the promise has not been realized. So the strike restarted. Most of the islanders were denied the right to travel for two days. Ladies with small kids, students, workers, executives - many people had to walk kilometers to reach their destination. The question is : Is it the only way to dig water? Were there no other ways? The southern inhabitants of the island are the main victims of water scarcity. Those victims blocks their own roads. What a stupid strike is this? There is no logic. Why don't the people invade the container road or any other town roads? Why don't they besiege KWA chief engineers. Lets watch and see where the strike goes to.

The people are ignorant as they don't know any other means of protest other than blocking roads forcefully. And what the government is doing, they give false promises upon the poor and ignorant people. Still no drop of water comes out of any outlets.

Got a wonderful book on history of St. George Church Wadel written by Fr. Isaac Kurishinkal, Ex. Vicar, St. George Church Wadel. Its a comprehensive study on Wadel Church and surrounding places etc. Most of the church records and details of the parish members are printed in the book.

The book contains tonnes of info.

1. Lots of historic parish records including Thaliolas.
2. Names and contact details of parish priests
3. Names and details of priests and nuns from the parish
4. Names and details of families of the parish
5. List of chapels and their history in the jurisdiction of the parish
6. List of institutions and their history in the jurisdiction of the parish
7. Property details of the parish

The book is a tremendous work. Worth having a book in your library if you are residing in the place. So much information are there inside the book. But in the 488 pages, it is not only the history of Wadel Church or Nayarambalam village alone, even Roman history, diocese history are explained in detail. In some places you may feel these explanations are unnecessary.

After reading the book, I felt that the writer of the book did not mind the privacy of the people at all. The complete contact details including mobile phone numbers of several nuns and priests made available through the book to the public.

The book was publishe on 8^th May 2011. Price of the book is Rs., 250/- And it is published by the author himself. Anyway it is a good effort to document many of the church records and history of the church and the place altogether. Kudos to Fr. Isaac Kurishinkal.

Narikulam Tharavad: Heritage homestay at Nayarambalam

Nayarambalam got a beautiful heritage homestay located near St. Augustine's Church and Veeranpuzha. The ancient mansion has more than 120 years heritage. I am too happy that these heritage structures are transformed to such luxurious  home stays rather than they are being demolished. Many ancient structures were demolished recently in Nayarambalam to build new fashion buildings within a span of 20-25 years. Now people slowly get awareness about the importance of our heritage.

Narikulam Tharavad was the home of former Panchayath President, the Late Mr. Cheriyan Narikulam. Presently the homestay is managed by his son Mr. Paul Cherian. He has added some brilliant amenities in its courtyard. An Erumadam (tree-top house) is set up in a huge tamerind tree. A mini Chinese net is set across the small canal inside the courtyard. The net is functional and in the spring tide, you can enjoy fishing with that.

The bedroom and common area like Nadumuttam (Central courtyard in a traditional Kerala Mansion) has been altered to give a new look, but still without loosing the ancient feel. An open bathroom is set to go with  the new trend. All the furniture in every room is genuinely ancient.

A Nostalgic Boat journey from Ernakulam to Vypeen.

പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചത് പോലെ തന്നെ, പരിചിത മുഖങ്ങളൊന്നും ഒരിടത്തും ഇല്ല. എങ്ങും അപരിചിതര്‍. പണ്ടൊക്കെ ഇവിടെ വരുമ്പോള്‍ വീട്ടില്‍ വന്നു കയറുന്നത് പോലെയായിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ കെട്ടിടം തന്നെ പുതിയത്. ഒരു ബ്രഹ്മാണ്ഡം കെട്ടിടം. പണ്ടത്തെ ആ പൊട്ടിപ്പൊളിഞ്ഞ കെട്ടിടത്തിനു ഉള്ള എന്തോ ഒന്ന് പക്ഷെ ഈ പുതിയ ആധുനിക കെട്ടിടത്തിനു ഇല്ല എന്ന ഒരു തോന്നല്‍.  നാളുകള്‍ക്കു ശേഷമാണ് വൈപ്പിനിലേക്ക് പോകാനായി എറണാകുളം ബോട്ട് ജെട്ടിയില്‍ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്. 

7.10 നാണ് ഇനിയത്തെ ബോട്ട് എന്ന് അടുത്തിരുന്ന ആള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. പുതിയ രീതിയിലുള്ള കസേരയില്‍ എന്തോ ഇരിക്കാന്‍ തോന്നിയില്ല. പണ്ടത്തെ ആ പൊട്ടിപ്പൊളിഞ്ഞ വാര്‍ക്ക ബെഞ്ചിനു ഉള്ള എന്തോ ഒന്ന് ഇതിനു ഇല്ലാത്തത് പോലെ. ക്യൂവില്‍ ആദ്യത്തെ ആളായി നിന്നു. കൃത്യം 7.10 ആയപ്പോള്‍ ടിക്കറ്റ്‌ കൊടുത്തു തുടങ്ങി. ആദ്യം തന്നെ ഞാന്‍ ടിക്കറ്റ്‌ വാങ്ങി. ഏതിലൂടെ പോകണം എന്ന് പോലും അറിയില്ല. മൂന്ന് നാല് കൊല്ലത്തിനു ശേഷം ആദ്യമായി എറണാകുളത്തു നിന്നു വൈപ്പിനില്‍ പോകുകയാണ്. നേരം ഇരുട്ടി. അക്കരെ ചെന്നാല്‍ ബസ്‌ ഒന്നും ഉണ്ടാവില്ല. ഓട്ടോ പിടിച്ചു പോകണം എന്നൊക്കെ കരുതി ഒടുവില്‍ ബോട്ടില്‍ കയറി. 
പണ്ട് ഡ്രൈവര്‍ മുകളിലെ കാബിനില്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ബോട്ടിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മുന്നില്‍ പുള്ളിക്ക് ഒരു കാബിന്‍ വച്ച് കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇനി വയ്യാത്ത കാല്‍ വച്ച് മുകളില്‍ വലിഞ്ഞു കയറേണ്ട. 

നല്ല ആരോഗ്യമുള്ള ബോട്ട്. പണ്ടൊക്കെ എത്ര പഴയ ബോട്ടുകളില്‍ ആണെന്നോ ഞങ്ങള്‍ കയറിയിരുന്നത്. കണ്ടാല്‍ പേടിയാകും. ലൈഫ് ബോയ്‌ ഒരു നാലഞ്ചെണ്ണം ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ ആയി. അതെടുത്ത് വെള്ളത്തില്‍ ഇട്ടു നോക്കിയാല്‍ ഒരു പക്ഷെ ആളെക്കാള്‍ മുമ്പ് അത് താഴ്ന്നു പോയേക്കും എന്ന് ഞങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ എല്ലാ സീറ്റിനു മുകളിലും ലൈഫ് ജാക്കറ്റ്. പാസ്സഞ്ചര്‍ കാപ്പാസിറ്റി 100 എന്ന് എഴുതി വച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ബോട്ട് പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരു ഇരുപത്തഞ്ചു പേര്‍ തികച്ച്ചുണ്ടാവില്ല. പണ്ട് നൂറ്റിപ്പത്ത്  പേര്‍ കയറേണ്ട സ്ഥാനത്ത് മുന്നൂറു പേര്‍ ഇടിച്ചു കയറുമായിരുന്നു. സീറ്റ് കിട്ടിയവര്‍ ഭാഗ്യവാന്മാര്‍. കായല്ക്കാറ്റ് കൊണ്ട് ഉറങ്ങാന്‍ നല്ല രസമാണ്. മിക്കവാറും ചുറ്റും ഒന്ന് കണ്ണോടിച്ചാല്‍ ആരെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടാവും പരിചയക്കാര്‍. 

രാവിലെ ഒമ്പതേ പത്തിന്റെ ബോട്ടില്‍ കയറാന്‍ തിടുക്കത്തില്‍ വരുമ്പോഴേക്കും അത് ജസ്റ്റ്‌ മിസ്സ്‌ ആയിട്ടുണ്ടാകും. ഇനി പത്ത് മിനിട്ട് കൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് ഒമ്പതേ ഇരുപതിന്റെ ബോട്ടില്‍ കയറാം എന്ന് കരുതി ഒറ്റക്ക് നില്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതാ മുന്നില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്നു സാവൂള്‍ റോച്ച. തിരക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ട് പോകാന്‍ പത്തിന്റെ ബോട്ട് വിട്ടു കളഞ്ഞെന്ന് അവന്‍. തൊട്ടു പിന്നില്‍ അനില്‍ വരുന്നു. പിന്നെ സുരേഷ് എത്തി. ഒരു കൊച്ചു സംഘം രൂപപ്പെട്ടു കഴിഞ്ഞു. തലേന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു അവസാനിപ്പിച്ച സംഭവങ്ങളുടെ തുടര്‍ച്ച. ജലജ ആണ് വരുന്നതെങ്കില്‍ മുന്നിലെ ജാലിയില്‍ നിന്നായിരിക്കും യാത്ര. ഗംഗയാണു എങ്കില്‍ എഞ്ചിന്‍ മുകളിലെ തട്ടില്‍ കാലു നീട്ടിയിരുന്നു യാത്ര. കേരള കുമാരി ആണെങ്കില്‍ പിന്നിലെ ഓപ്പണ്‍ സ്പേസില്‍ ഒതുങ്ങി നിന്നൊരു യാത്ര. ഒറ്റയ്ക്കാണെങ്കില്‍ വല്ല പുസ്തകവും വായിച്ചു ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു സീറ്റ് പിടിച്ചു അങ്ങനെ. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ കൂര്‍ക്കം വലിച്ചു ഉറങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ട്. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ കായല്‍ക്കാഴ്ചകള്‍ കണ്ടു കായല്ക്കാറ്റിന്റെ കുളിരും നുകര്‍ന്ന്. മഴക്കാലം ആണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഏറ്റവും രസം. ബോട്ടുകള്‍ ചിലപ്പോള്‍ കാറ്റ് പിടിച്ചു ഒഴുകി നടക്കും. ഒരിക്കല്‍ അഴിമുഖത്തേക്ക് കാറ്റ് പിടിച്ചു നീങ്ങിയ ബോട്ടിനെ കോസ്റ്റ് ഗാര്‍ഡ് കപ്പല്‍ രക്ഷപെടുത്തിയ സംഭവം ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നു. 

പഴയ ബോട്ടുകള്‍. അതിലും പഴയ ജെട്ടികള്‍. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് യാത്രക്കാര്‍. എറണാകുളം-വൈപ്പിന്‍ റൂട്ടിന്റെ സ്ഥിതി ശരിക്കും ദയനീയമായിരുന്നു. പഴയ ബോട്ടുകളിലും ജെട്ടികളിലും ഇരുന്നു ഈ ദയനീയതയെ പറ്റി എത്ര തവണ ഞങ്ങള്‍ പങ്കു വച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്! വൈപ്പിന്‍ - എറണാകുളം ബോട്ട് ഒരു ഫോറം ആയിരുന്നു. മികച്ച ഒരു ഇന്റര്‍ ആക്റ്റീവ് ഫോറം. ദ്വീപിന്റെ പള്‍സ്‌ അവിടെ നിന്ന് വായിച്ചെടുക്കാം. ഇരുപത്തെട്ടു കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ നീളത്തില്‍ നീണ്ടു കിടക്കുന്ന ദ്വീപില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന ഓരോ സംഭവങ്ങളും അന്നന്ന് തന്നെ അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നത് ബോട്ടിലെ സജീവ ഫോറങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നായിരുന്നു. 

7.10 ന്റെ ബോട്ട് നീങ്ങിത്തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ ഏതാണ്ട്  7.20 ആയി. ചുറ്റും ഒരുപാട് മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍. ദീപാലംകൃതമായ പഴയ തുറമുഖം ഇപ്പോള്‍ ആരും അധികം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാത്തത് പോലെ കണ്ണടച്ച് ഉറങ്ങി കിടന്നു. മുമ്പ് കാട് പിടിച്ചു ഇരുളില്‍ കിടന്നിരുന്ന വല്ലാര്‍പാടം പ്രകാശത്തില്‍ മുങ്ങിക്കുളിച്ചു പുത്തന്‍ തുറമുഖറാണിയായി വിരാജിക്കുന്നു. ബോട്ട് ഐലന്‍ഡില്‍ അടുത്തു. കുറച്ചു യാത്രക്കാര്‍ ഇറങ്ങി, ഒന്ന് രണ്ടു പേര്‍ കയറി.  ഇനിയാകെ പത്തു പന്ത്രണ്ടു പേര്‍ മാത്രം യാത്രക്കാരായി ശേഷിക്കുന്നു. അവരുടെ ശ്രദ്ധ മിക്കവാറും വല്ലാര്‍പാടം ടെര്‍മിനലില്‍ തന്നെ. വഴിയില്‍ ഡഫറിന്‍ പോയിന്റ്‌. കായലിലെ ഏറ്റവും ആഴം കൂടിയത് ഇവിടെയാണെന്നാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ശരിയാണോ എന്തോ, അത് വഴി പോകുമ്പോള്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ പേടി തോന്നിയിരുന്നു, പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ബോട്ടിന്റെ ജാലിയിലും പിന്നിലും ഒക്കെ സാഹസികമായി ഇരുന്നു യാത്ര ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍. സന്ധ്യയായാല്‍ ഒരു പാട് പക്ഷികളുടെ താവളമായിരുന്ന വിമലവനം. ടെര്‍മിനലിനായി  വനം വെട്ടി മാറ്റിയപ്പോള്‍ അവിടത്തെ പക്ഷികള്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ എങ്ങോട്ട് പോയിട്ടുണ്ടാവും. ഒരു പക്ഷെ അയല്‍ക്കൂട്ടമായ മംഗളവനത്തില്‍ അഭയം തേടിക്കാണും. 

ഇടയ്ക്കു വെറുതെ ഒന്ന് മട്ടാഞ്ചേരിയില്‍ നോക്കി. പുതിയ ചില ബഹുനിലക്കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍ അവിടെയും പ്രകാശം ചൊരിഞ്ഞു നിന്ന് ചിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്തോ എഴുതിയിരുന്നത് വായിക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. ബോട്ട് വൈപ്പിനില്‍ അടുക്കാറായി. നേരെ അടുക്കുമോ അതോ തിരിഞ്ഞടുക്കുമോ, ആദ്യം ഇറങ്ങി ബസില്‍ സീറ്റ് പിടിക്കാന്‍ മുമ്പൊക്കെ ബോട്ടിന്റെ വാതില്‍പ്പടിയില്‍ തന്നെ ഓടാന്‍ തയ്യാറായി നില്‍ക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ശരിക്കും അടുക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്നേ ചാടിയിറങ്ങും. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ നേരത്തെ വന്നു വാതില്‍പ്പടിയില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഞങ്ങളുടെ കണക്കുകൂട്ടലുകള്‍ തെറ്റിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഡ്രൈവര്‍ ബോട്ടിനെ തിരിച്ചടുപ്പിക്കും. ഇളിഭ്യരായി ഞങ്ങള്‍ അവിടെ നില്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍, ലോട്ടറി അടിച്ചത് പോലെ മറ്റേ സൈഡില്‍ ഉള്ളവര്‍ ആദ്യം ഇറങ്ങും. ഏതായാലും ഇത്തവണ ബോട്ട് നേരെ തന്നെ അടുത്തു. ആദ്യം ഇറങ്ങാമായിരുന്നിട്ടും വൈകി ഇറങ്ങി. സാവധാനം നടന്നു. ജെട്ടിയില്‍ നിന്ന് ബസ്‌ സ്റ്റാന്‍ഡിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയ്കൊന്നും കാര്യമായ മാറ്റങ്ങള്‍ ഇല്ല. അരികിലുള്ള വീടുകള്‍ പലതും കാലത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് മാറി. സ്റ്റാന്‍ഡില്‍ ചെന്നപ്പോള്‍ അവിടം ശൂന്യം. ബസ്‌ ഓട്ടോ ഒന്നും ഇല്ല, കുറെ ആളുകള്‍ ബസിനായി അവിടെയും ഇവിടെയും കാത്തു നില്‍ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തൊട്ടടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ബന്ധുവിനെ കാണാനാണ് ഞാന്‍ ഇവിടെ വന്നത്. അവിടെ പോയി തിരികെ സ്റ്റാന്‍ഡില്‍ വന്നപ്പോഴും സ്ഥിതി ഇതൊക്കെ തന്നെ. ഒടുവില്‍ ഒരു ഓട്ടോ വന്നു. യാത്രക്കാരെ കുത്തി നിറച്ചു അയാള്‍ ഞങ്ങളെ ഗോശ്രീ പാലത്തിന്റെ ഇറക്കില്‍ ഡ്രോപ്പ് ചെയ്തു.

ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ ഈ വഴി വരണം. ആരോ മന്ത്രിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ. വരാം എന്ന് ഉള്ളാലെ പറഞ്ഞു.

Nayarambalam main bridge expansion progresses in super snail-speed

Works of Nayarambalam main bridge and Vellithanparambu bridge have been started before more than a year as per the court order to expand the narrow bridges in Vypeen-Pallippuram State Highway to ensure smooth traffic. The work is done by the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). Their mission is to widen the eight narrow bridges between Vypeen and Cherai, which have been limiting the free movement of vehicles. But the work is progressing in extremely slow speed. The spans has been fixed so far and the approach road has to be constructed. Right now there is no work is being done. So let us hope, within next two or three years all the works may have been completed!

Nayarambalam main bridge was opened on 10^th March 1956 by the then Minister for Public Works, Mr. Velayudhan K.I. A stone inscription can be found still on the parapet of the bridge. This narrow bridge typically exemplifies lack of far-sighted vision of our ministers and engineers.
